Timo Sarpaneva was born in Helsinki in 1926 and died there in 2006. He studied graphics and later taught at the Helsinki College of Art. He enjoyed international renown since the f ifties. Honorary doctorate awarded by the Royal College of Art, London. Professorship since 1977. Sarpaneva received a number of international prizes. These include the 1958 Pro Finlandia Medal, the 1962 gold medal of the California State Fair and Exhibition, the 1965 Eurostar for packaging and the 1967 Gulden Vorm Certif icat, Utrecht. Sarpaneva started his work with Rosenthal in 1971. This co-operation was typified by the high degree of commitment on both sides – forms which today impress with their organic appearance were wrested from the materials through years of work.
